According to the research conducted by Izmir University of Economics, hydropower is the most suitable energy source for Turkey, followed by wind, geothermal and solar energy.
Görkem Uçtuğ, an academician from the university's engineering faculty, said that the study positively highlighted environmental factors. It was announced that the research was carried out taking into account the environmental, social and economic situation of Turkey.

"There were various indicators to look at in terms of environmental factors, but the most important one had to do with carbon emissions. In terms of the economy in general, we considered lifetime costs. By the way, from a social point of view, we then calculated the scores of each type of energy in each of the categories. "He said the researchers took into account the opinions of 143 people, including energy system engineers, electrical engineers, environmental engineers and environmental engineers.
Stating that Turkey is preparing to import energy worth $ 50 billion, Uçtuğ said that this figure can be reduced by taking advantage of local energy sources.
In an unprecedented move in the country's history, Turkey has increased the share of domestic resources in electricity generation over the past decade thanks to numerous legal frameworks and investment programs.Energy and Natural Resources Minister Fatih Donmez said in September that as a result of the country's ongoing efforts, Turkey has provided 65% of its electricity needs from local sources in the last seven months.
Turkey's installed power capacity was calculated as 88,551 megawatts until the end of 2018. In terms of resource types, hydroelectric power accounted for 31.9%, natural gas 25.6%, coal 21.5%.Wind and solar energy accounted for 7.9% and 5.7% of the total installed power capacity, respectively. The remaining 5.9% came from other sources.
